Who is a notary public?

Generally, it refers to a legally authorized person, to acknowledge and certify signatures and documents. The requirements to become a notary public varies depending on the jurisdiction. Some jurisdiction don't require a notary public to pass an exam. Other jurisdictions don't require a notary public to pass an exam. Some jurisdictions like New York exempt certain people (i.e. attorneys) from an exam requirement, in order to become a notary public. A notary public in the US should not be confused with civil law notaries, found in other countries. Generally a notary public in the US, is prohibited to give legal advice and/or draft legal documents. It may be possible in certain jurisdictions, where a notary public may be able to sell pre-drafted standardized templates that could be utilized for the auto/self generating creation of legal documents. In certain jurisdictions, the use of Notary Public maybe paramount to the execution and recordation of real estate documents. Certain jurisdictions (not New York based on on its author’s latest research — at least not prior to the Covid 19 pandemic) have experimented with online notarizations.
